Hyperpigmentation in the intimate area: why does it happen?

The aging process in the genital-perineal area and adjacent areas takes place in the same way as the rest of the body. With aging, there is a loss of collagen and elastin, and firmness of the skin. Another effect of aging is hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin, including the skin around the external genital and inner thigh area.

This hyperpigmention is a result of aging, genetic predisposition, and hormonal changes. Individuals with type IV phototype or darker, have an increased prevalance of hyperpigmentation. The increase in estrogen activity also stimulates an increase in tyrosinase which increases melanin production, and leads to excess hyperpigmentation.

There are also external factors which cause this intimate area to darken. These external factors include dry skin, certain medications, hormonal imbalance, friction, or frequent use of tight pants and underwear. All of these external factors can cause the inner thighs to darken.

Another common reason for skin darkening is hair removal by waxing or resulting folliculitis, which can cause an inflammatory reaction which causes the skin to darken and produce an increased amount of melanin production.

How does the Dermamelan Intimate Depigmentation treatment work?

The dermamelan intimate approach comprises a unique mix of active compounds that depigment while also acting on the inflammatory component that causes many hyperpigmentations, resulting in a visible improvement in skin quality, turgor, and water retention in the area.

The dermamelan intimate depigmentation treatment requires two phases, the first phase is done in the office where a board certified practitioner will apply the specially formulated peel, and the second phase is at home where the patient will be instructed to follow a vigorous aftercare routine.

The in-office DermaMelan treatment is performed by a board-certified practitioner. Phase One’s goal is to intensively depigment your skin.
The practitioner will first wash the treatment area with lukewarm water and gauze. Then, they’ll apply mesolips protector around the internal genital area to protect these areas from the solution and prevent the DermaMelan solution from migrating.

Next, the practitioner applies the DermaMelan intimate peeling solution to the areas that you want to treat. This solution will remain in place for 7 minutes.

The practitioner then sprays a post-peel neutralizing solution and ensures that no residue needs to be removed. They then apply a layer of the DermaMelan intimate mask over the treatment area. If needed, they’ll also apply more mesolips protector. The last in-office step is the application of the DermaMelan intimate occlusive film. This film activates the active ingredients and helps keep all the DermaMelan components in place.

You can go home after the film is applied, but you’ll need to leave it in place for two hours. Your practitioner will give you a pair of disposable panties to wear.

The goal of Phase Two is to regulate the body’s production of melanin. After everything applied in-office has been in place for two hours, you’ll remove the mask by washing the treatment area with lukewarm water and a gentle cleansing gel.

Make sure that all the DermaMelan product is removed. Next, you’ll apply the post- procedure crystal fiber mask over your treatment area.

For the easiest application, you’ll want to lay face up on a towel. Leave this mask in place for 10-15 minutes before washing off.

For 48 hours after your treatment, you’ll apply the DermaMelan intimate home depigmenting gel cream over the treatment area. You’ll want to wear a panty liner to protect your intimate areas during this phase.

Depending on the extent of your hyperpigmentation, your specific instructions may vary. Always follow your practitioner’s instructions for the best results.
