IPL Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target various skin concerns, including sun damage, age spots, redness, and fine lines. This versatile technology improves overall skin tone, texture, and clarity.

At Skin Logic Aesthetics we offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Calibrated Pulsed Light (CPL) photorejuvenation treatments for patients requiring cosmetic skin improvements as well as treatment for medical skin conditions. We ensure that all IPL/CPL photorejuvenation treatments are given to the highest specifications so that they are both safe and effective. Treatments are given at our state-of-the-art skin clinic in Harley Street, London.

Superior by design, the new Xlase Plus Calibrated Pulsed Light (CPL) applicator offers several innovative and advanced technology enhancements. Compared to the other IPL systems available on the market, the CPL system has proven to be among the most powerful. The unique platinum-coated reflective cavity generates maximum energy density with true energy fluence up to 30J/cm2 at a very high speed, giving up to 3 shots per second.

Increased collagen production

In cosmetic dermatology we make use of CPL to stimulate the lower skin layers, encouraging the fibroblasts there to produce more collagen to strengthen and plump the facial skin. This helps to improve the texture and elasticity of the skin, reducing wrinkles, shrinking pores and giving the skin a firmer, fresher look. You might also notice that as the pore size in the skin shrinks, your skin becomes a little less oily, reducing the risk of spots, blackheads and whiteheads.

When Should You Consider IPL/CPL for Photorejuvenation?

This advanced treatment is ideal for individuals who want to:

  • Reduce the appearance of sun damage and age spots
  • Improve overall skin tone and texture
  • Minimise visible blood vessels and redness
  • Address fine lines and wrinkles
  • Achieve a more youthful and radiant complexion
  • Treat multiple skin concerns in a single session

The science behind IPL Photorejuvenation is both innovative and effective:

  • Broad-spectrum light is delivered to the skin in short pulses
  • The light is absorbed by pigment and hemoglobin in the skin
  • This process targets pigmented lesions, visible blood vessels, and stimulates collagen production
  • The treatment improves skin texture, reduces discolouration, and enhances overall skin appearance

You will be asked to put on some goggles to protect your eyes. A layer of chilled gel is applied to the area to cool the skin during treatment. A pulse of light is delivered into the skin which lasts for less than a second. A feeling of warmth or skin pricking is felt with each pulse of light. About 50 pulses may be required to treat the whole face.

We advise patients to avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure 6 weeks prior to their IPL treatment. It is also best to avoid any treatments that are likely to irritate the skin for 1-2 weeks before treatment which can include waxing. Your specialist skin cosmetologist will be able to go through your medical history that you provided at your consultation to advice on any medications that may cause bruising and if you have a history of cold sores than you may be required to seek GP advice before you start having treatment.

The treated area may be a little red immediately after the procedure, but this is normal and will not last long at all. Brown spots may initially appear darker after your first treatment but these will gradually fade and after multiple treatments eventually disappear.

Some other rare side effects include swelling, bruising and superficial blisters. These side effects are temporary and tend to disappear after a few days.

A full list of side effects will be discussed with you at your initial consultation.

Sun tanning after CPL treatment will delay further treatment until it has settled and may cause temporary skin darkening.

Reducing and removing sun spots/liver spots and skin pigmentation.

Sun spots (also known as ‘liver spots’) are the darker, pigmented areas that appear on lighter coloured skin types due to ageing and sun exposure. These lesions are known medically as lentigines. They are completely harmless but when they appear on the hands and face they can cause problems with self-esteem and confidence.

Their appearance can be made much less obvious with a series of CPL photorejuvenation treatments.

The pigment within lentigines absorbs more energy from intense pulsed light during CPL treatments than does the surrounding skin. As with thread veins, this causes very localised heating that disrupts the pigment molecules without affecting the normal skin immediately adjacent to the area of pigmentation.

As the protein molecules that make up the pigments are broken apart, they are reabsorbed by the body, and the colour of the spot changes. With repeated photorejuvenation treatments, the spot starts to blend in with the surrounding skin, becoming much less noticeable.

CPL can also be used to even out the irregular pigmentation on the skin that can arise from sun exposure over the years. It works in the same way as described above.

FAQs

Does CPL Photorejuvenation treatment hurt?

CPL for Photorejuvenation treatment is not painful; as the pulses of light are directed onto your skin you will experience a heated sensation and like someone is flicking your skin with an elastic band. If you are sensitive to pain then we recommend you speak to your skin specialist who may be able to apply some anaesthetic lotion to the areas being treated before your procedure.

How many CPL treatments will I need?

The number of CPL for Photorejuvenation treatments that you will need will be determined by the severity of the skin condition.  Most patients start with a course of five treatments which are carried out every 1 to 2 weeks to allow for the skin to heal and recover in between. We then recommend that you have 1 or 2 CPL Photorejuvenation treatments per year to maintain your results. All patients of Skin Logic Aesthetics are given a personal treatment plan.

How soon will I see the results?

You will start to see some improvement in your skin a week after each IPL Photorejuvenation treatment. The best results will be seen 3-5 months after your last treatment if having a course. Your results may vary after each treatment and usually, each treatment you have will be a little stronger than the one before meaning the results will start to become more noticeable over time.

How long does each CPL treatment last?
The results will last between 12 and 18 months, at which point you can come back to us for a top up treatment. Your results will also depend on how much your skin is exposed to the sun, if you are in the sun a lot and not wearing sun protection then it is very likely that any brown spots or redness will return.
Can I apply make-up after CPL treatment?

CPL Photorejuvenation treatment may leave your skin looking a little red. It is possible for you to apply make-up after treatment to reduce the appearance of this but you must avoid any abrasive treatments such as any type of exfoliator or Retin-A. At Skin Logic Aesthetics we recommend wearing a good quality mineral makeup as the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in many mineral make-up products will aid in soothing the skin.

All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and results may vary. We recommend a one to one consultation with our expert practitioners to discuss your treatment options.
