Erbium Laser Resurfacing Treatment in London

Erbium Laser Resurfacing

YAG Fractional 2940nm Laser Resurfacing – The Most Advanced Skin Rejuvenation Treatment!

Erbium:YAG Fractional laser, like CO2 carbon dioxide laser, are powerful ablative lasers designed to remove the outer layers of the skin using a burst of energy. Laser Resurfacing also known as a Laser Peel, has advantages over other methods of resurfacing. Some of these advantages include less bleeding, more precision with the ability to target tiny areas like moles, and most importantly, a shorter recovery time. Patients who have had Erbium laser treatment recover twice as quickly as those who have had CO2 laser.

The dramatic resurfacing results this laser treatment yields may last up to five years!

Unlike traditional lasers which use a solid beam, our medical grade Erbium:YAG Fractional laser, use a matrix of microscopic beams to penetrate the skin which means only a proportion of the skin is treated with each shot of the laser. This allows uninjured skin within the treatment site to act as a barrier which promotes quicker healing and a faster recovery. The stimulation of a healing response leads to the formation of new collagen in the treated area. In addition to this ‘ablative’ effect on the skin’s surface, there is a tightening effect on collateral collagen fibres and a resulting smoothing effect. Benefits include clearing sun damage such as age spots, fine lines and wrinkles; smoothing out acne scars and an improvement in the appearance of pores.

The results of laser resurfacing are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer and smoother, look brighter, show a more even skin tone and a radiant glow. Over the next 3-6 months new collagen continues to develop.

Erbium: YAG Fractional laser work in skin regeneration.

The Erbium Yag laser is designed as a treatment of choice to regenerate the skin both deep down and on the surface.

The Erbium laser emits light energy that is absorbed by water as the light hits the skin. The tissues that contains water is vaporized. The excess heat in the area that is generated by the laser results in collagen shrinkage and stimulates the formation of collagen which will tighten the skin further. As skin cells are mostly composed of water, the heat produced by the laser light is scattered over the skin. The object is to induce controlled damage to the skin to stimulate it, just enough to promote healing. This damage will be similar to a burn and afterwards, the skin will ooze and weep. Deeper wrinkles require more treatment, while shallow scars and wrinkles may be completely erased after just one treatment.

The laser pulses treat wrinkles, scars, dark spots and other skin irregularities layer after layer. In addition, this process stimulates the formation of new collagen which provides better elasticity and support to the skin.

Laser resurfacing is one of the most advanced skin rejuvenation treatments available and is known in the industry as being effective in treating both superficial and deep skin problems, such as:

  • scars of any origin
  • acne scarring
  • surgical scarring
  • stretch marks
  • sagging skin
  • wrinkles
  • pigmentation
  • melasma
  • sun damage
  • large pores

Erbium lasers can be ablative or non-ablative. Their biggest appeal is that they are highly attractive to water and therefore able to quickly deliver wavelengths of laser light into the dermal layer to vaporise skin’s water content. The Erbium laser ability to target a specific treatment area of concern means Erbium lasers are regularly chosen for skin aging concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. This increased accuracy in the treatment area is also why Erbium lasers are often favoured over CO2 lasers.

Erbium YAG laser produces a laser beam that has a very high affinity with the water contained in the tissues, higher than CO2 laser; indeed, the Erbium 2940nm wavelength has the ability to absorb water 16 times more than CO2 laser, so its penetration into the skin, although lower, Erbium is still an intensive clinic laser treatment for dramatic rejuvenation results, performing at the same time, a less aggressive action with much faster recovery time.

FAQ

Erbium YAG laser is indicated for skin lesions such as sun keratosis, atrophic facial scars (acne, chickenpox), dyschromia (melasma, freckles), facial wrinkles, striae ( stretch marks), sagging skin, large pores. Using pulses of variable depth, even patients with deeper wrinkles can achieve excellent results.

The treatment itself generally is well tolerated, however, heat usually starts to build up in the skin immediately following the procedure and the treated area may feel hot and sore much like moderate sunburn for 6-8hrs. Redness of the skin will occur and may last between 1-3 days; make-up can be applied the following day if desired. The skin may feel dry and tight and very mild peeling may be experienced which can last for several days. Unlike traditional skin resurfacing, blistering and crusting does not usually occur following the procedure. Dryness of the skin is treated using a series of bespoke cosmeceutical skincare products. A Biorevitalization treatment can be combined immediately and over the subsequent days to help with quicker recovery and more stimulation.

All areas of the body can be treated with Erbium:YAG Fractional skin resurfacing but it should be emphasised that these techniques work best on facial skin, neck, décolleté and back of the hands. Facial skin is the most suitable area of the body for treatment because of the abundance of dermal glands. These glands, such as the sweat and oil glands, provide the new cells that will migrate to the surface of the skin. Erbium lasers have been used on other areas of the body such as the neck, chest, arms, and hands, but with fewer dermal glands these areas are more likely to scar.

We are also using the treatment on other ares of the body where scaring has occurred. All types of skin colour can be treated except dark skinned Afro-Caribbean.

Local anaesthetic numbing cream is applied to the area and left on for 30 minutes. Sometimes numbing injections are also done. The laser is then gently passed over the selected site. One or more passes are made depending on how deep a treatment is intended. The laser feels warm as it passes over the skin. Cooled air can be used to reduce the warm sensation.

The skin looks pink afterwards ranging from slightly pink for a micropeel, to intense red for a deep peel. In the case of a micropeel the pinkness settles over a 1-2 couple of days. In the case of deeper peels the skin looks deep red and there may be some oozing and the redness settles over 7-10 days. It is important to use good sun protection as the skin recovers to protect the fresh new skin from being damaged again.

As the skin heals it reveals fresher, younger looking skin and reduces surface irregularities and brown spots. New collagen continues to develop over 3-6 months.

For best results, we recommend a series of 3-6 treatment sessions performed every 4-6 weeks.

There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that laser treatment can be linked to skin disorders or increased risk of skin cancer. However, as with any laser or light based treatment, there is a very small risk of potential side effects such as pigment changes and scarring. The risk of these occurring can be reduced to an absolute minimum by ensuring that patients follow the pre and post treatment advice given during the initial consultation.
