Firstly, Fungal infections can affect any part of the body. Fungi are normally present in and on the body alongside various bacteria. But when a fungus begins to overgrow, you can get an infection.

A fungal nail infection (Onychomycosis), also called tinea unguium, is a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails is where the fungal microbe invades the nail bed. This condition causes fingernails or toenails to thicken, discolour, disfigure, and split. Although a fungal nail infection is a cosmetic concern, if left untreated toenails can become so thick that they press against the inside of the shoes, causing pressure, irritation, and pain. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, so this type of environment can cause them to naturally overpopulate.

Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus

At Skin Logic Aesthetics we are using a Medical Grade Laser Platform, which is a safe and effective device for the treatment of nails with onychomycosis/nail fungus per the manufacturing company.

The laser will penetrate into the upper dermis, below the nail bed, to kill bacteria that cause the fungus. The full results of the treatment are generally seen 3-6 months after the treatment begins, due to slow nail growth.

Laser Treatment for Fungal Nail

Recent studies have shown that Onychomycosis Fungal Nail Laser Treatment can improve the appearance of infected nails in up to 80% of cases after a full treatment course.

Before Treatment

  • Remove/Do not come to your appointment with nail polish on.
  • Skin should be clean and product-free for your treatment. Trim nails and clean them with a nail brush.
  • The skin surrounding nails should be shaved if hair growth is prominent.
  • Spray all shoes with anti-fungal spray or disinfectant. Continue weekly for at least 4 weeks.
  • Do not apply topical anti-fungal cream or powder 2 days prior to treatment.
  • Come with sandals or an extra pair of socks to wear after treatment.

During Treatment
Most treatments take between 5 and 15 minutes. Your treatment time will depend on the size of the area you are having treated. During your treatment you will feel as light warming on your skin. Let the practitioner know if you experience any discomfort. The practitioner will make multiple passes over the area. Pain tolerance may lower with each pass.

What to expect afterwards
Following treatment, you should avoid sun exposure on the treated areas as much as possible for 48 hours. This is superficial and will heal with no adverse effects. Most patients note a redness that may last 2 hours to 2 days after treatment.

To help prevent reinfection:
  • Apply anti-fungal cream 2 times per day for approximately 2 weeks to 3 months depending on the severity of the infection. Spray entire sole and toes.
  • Apply anti-fungal powder to all shoes at least once per week for at least one month.
  • Wear clean socks and shoes after treatment.
  • Wash your sheets, disinfect your shower/bath, and vacuum any carpets on the day or the day prior to treatment.
  • Nail polish may be applied 24 hours after treatment.
  • Toenails and fingernails may take 9-12 months and 6-9 months to grow out respectively. Severely infected nails may take longer.

The average interval time between treatments is 2-6 weeks. The number of treatments is typically 3-6, depending on the severity of the Onychomycosis.

It’s common to seek over-the-counter ways of treating fungal nails, or oral medication prescribed by your doctor but laser treatments are an alternative option. However, with Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenail, a Laser beam will destroy the spores responsible for the fungal infection. You will likely need a minimum of 6 sessions but the number of sessions will vary depending on the severity of the infection.

Results will become apparent as the new nail grows, which should be clear of infection.

The science behind Onychomycosis Fungal Nail Laser Treatment is both sophisticated and effective:

  • Laser light penetrates the nail plate to reach the nail bed
  • The light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the fungal organisms
  • This causes the fungus to heat up and be destroyed
  • The treatment stimulates healthy nail growth

Is A Fungal Nail Infection Common?

This is an increasingly common nail disorder in adults the risk of having this nail disease increases with age and through underlying nail disease. Fungi that are already present in or on your body can cause nail infections. If you have come in contact with someone else who has a fungal infection, you may have contracted it as well. Fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails, likely because your toes are usually confined to shoes, where they’re in a warm, moist environment, in which the fungi thrive.

Common signs of a fungal nail infection include:

  • a distorted nail that may lift off from the nail bed
  • an odor coming from the infected nail
  • a brittle or thickened nail

FAQs

How does the laser toenail treatment work?

The toenail laser treatment works by using laser light that passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue. The laser light is absorbed by pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat up, and this heat kills or damages the fungal organism. Your toenail will not fall off as a result of this treatment. You will not notice a clear nail immediately since it can take at least 3 months for your clear nail to begin to emerge and 6 to 12 months for the entire nail to grow out.

How long does the laser Onychomycosis treatment take?

The laser toenail fungus treatment usually takes up to 30 minutes. Typically we schedule four to six treatments depending on severity spaced two weeks apart.

Will I be able to walk after the Laser Fungal Nail Treatment?

The laser nail treatment does not harm living tissue. Patients can simply walk in, have the procedure done, and then walk right out and go back to their normal activity as recommend by the foot specialist.

Is Fungal Nail Laser Treatment painful?

Most patients report no pain during the treatment. You may feel a warming sensation, but it’s generally very comfortable.

If I know I want the laser Onychomycosis treatment, why do I need a consultation?

Not all yellow toenails are fungal infections. Other conditions such as nail trauma and several dermatological conditions can mimic fungal infections and will not respond to this treatment. It is important to have your yellow toenails assessed by our qualified practitioner to determine if this treatment is appropriate for your particular condition. Also, if fungal, the nail will be trimmed and thinned out to aid the Laser beam to penetrate through the entire nail to optimize your chances of growing out a clear nail.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, we recommend 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. However, the number of sessions may vary depending on the severity of the infection and how your nails respond to the treatment.

How soon will I see results?

You may start to see improvement as your nail grows out. Full results are typically visible once the nail has completely grown out, which can take 6-12 months.

Can the fungal infection come back after treatment?

While the treatment is highly effective, reinfection is possible if you’re exposed to fungi again. We’ll provide guidance on how to minimize the risk of reinfection.

What can I do to ensure my Onychomycosis doesn't return?

To prevent toenail fungus from reoccurring, one should eliminate all existing infected items which may have toenail fungus in them. Any item that has come in contact with the infected toenail or fingernail should be removed.  Old socks could have toenail fungus if they were worn by a person with a toenail fungus infection, and old shoes could have toenail fungus that is viable if they were worn by a person suffering from toenail fungus infections so by eliminating them, after you eliminate toenail fungus in your toenails would be beneficial.

The same would go for things like gloves which were worn by a person with a fingernail fungal infection or even items like keyboards which could have nail fungus pathogens on them if they were used by a person with a fungal infection in the fingernail.

All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and results may vary. We recommend a one to one consultation with our expert practitioners to discuss your treatment options.
