Picosure Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoo removal has never been easier!

Laser technology has made it possible to remove unwanted tattoos via a faster and safer method than ever before. No longer will patients need to consider skin-damaging treatments such as acid removal, excision, and dermabrasion. Today’s aesthetic lasers offer a proven alternative for safer and more effective ink removal. Lasers remove the ink by targeting the ink’s pigment with a high-intensity light beam causing it to break up into smaller molecules. The ink is then absorbed by the natural bodily processes, fading the tattoo until it is no longer visible.

Tattoo Removal Treatment using PicoSure

PicoSure is an advanced laser technology that uses ultra-short pulses (measured in picoseconds) to break down tattoo ink into tiny particles. This innovative approach allows for faster ink removal with less damage to surrounding tissue compared to traditional laser treatments.

Until the launch of PicoSure, Q-Switched lasers had been considered the gold standard for removing tattoos. Q-switched laser treatments use thermal energy to heat up and break apart the ink particles. Now with PicoSure, ultra-short pulses (one trillionth of a second in length!) hit the ink particle with a pressure so great, the ink shatters into tiny dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are more readily absorbed and eliminated by the body. This can mean better clearance of the tattoo and less treatments overall!

Our tattoo removal method often requires fewer treatments than traditional Q-switched lasers. Additionally, our patients have reported better clearance (or “disappearance) of the tattoo with improved recovery time.

Cutting-Edge Tattoo Removal at Our Harley Street Clinic in London

As the number of individuals with tattoos has increased, so has the need for improved tattoo removal methods. Tattoo removal methods have evolved from potentially harmful treatments that often had painful and sometimes permanent side effects to less harmful methods with good results. Until the introduction of laser tattoo removal, people resorted to tattoo removal methods such as acid treatments, surgical excision, and dermabrasion. Recent studies have shown that PicoSure can remove tattoos in 40% fewer treatments compared to traditional Q-switched lasers.

Laser energy is delivered to the tattoo, targeting the ink and breaking it down into smaller particles. The particles are eliminated through the body’s natural processes resulting in a lightening of the tattoo ink.

The science behind PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal is both sophisticated and effective:

  • Ultra-short laser pulses target tattoo ink in the skin
  • The rapid energy delivery shatters ink particles into tiny fragments
  • These microscopic particles are then naturally eliminated by the body’s immune system
  • The treatment is effective on a wide range of ink colors, including traditionally difficult ones like blues and greens

To ensure the best possible results from your PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal treatment in London, follow these guidelines:

Before Your Treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least two weeks prior
  • Discontinue use of skincare products containing retinoids or exfoliants on the treatment area
  • Inform your practitioner of any medications you’re taking
  • Arrive with clean skin, free of lotions or creams

After Your Treatment:

  • Apply cold compresses to the treated area to reduce swelling
  • Keep the treated area clean and dry
  • Apply any recommended ointments as directed
  • Avoid sun exposure and use broad-spectrum SPF on the treated area
  • Refrain from picking or scratching the treated skin
  • Follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner

Picosecond vs. Nanosecond Technology

Traditional nanosecond lasers predominately rely on photothermal action, delivering heat to the pigment and surrounding tissue. PicoSure takes advantage of PressureWave Technology to shatter the target ink into tiny particles that are easily eliminated by the body.

  • Ultra-short Pulse Duration Is the Difference
  • Picosecond pulse width is 100X shorter than nanosecond technology.
  • Only ultrashort pulse durations trigger photomechanical effect.
  • With this short pulse width, half the fluence is required compared to Q-Switched nanosecond lasers.

FAQs

What tattoo ink colours are easiest to remove?

While all lasers have the easiest time with black, and the hardest time with all of the other colors, the new Picosure laser with picosecond technology erases all tattoos of all colors much faster, and with less pain, than other lasers. Reds are the most difficult to remove, and the second most difficult are blues and greens, but Picosure does them better than older technology.

How long do I have to wait before having my second laser tattoo removal session?

Generally speaking, waiting 4 to 6 weeks between treatments is more typical, since it may take a few weeks for the pigment disintegrated by each treatment to be absorbed fully by your body, making you ready to get the most out of the following treatment. Treating too close together may also increase the risk of marks being left on your skin, and may cost more in the long run. However, that said, it may also rid you of your tattoo faster, if your tattoo and skin type can handle the frequent treatments. Other factors that may affect how long the doctor recommends waiting include the size of your tattoo and the location on your body, since larger tattoos and tattoos further away from the heart at the ends of the limbs may both take longer for your body to absorb.

What does laser tattoo removal feel like?

For many patients, the feeling of laser tattoo removal has been compared to what it feels like when getting a tattoo, however it is very fast. Your practitioner will work with you on the best comfort option based on your individual situation.

How many treatments will tattoo removal require?

The number of laser treatments needed for tattoo removal is dependent on a number of variables such as ink type, size of the tattoo, location on the body, how many colors are in the tattoo, scarring in the area, density of the ink, amateur vs professional tattoo, type of laser used, lifestyle habits, own immune system etc. During your consultation, a practitioner will evaluate your tattoo and recommend a realistic treatment regime to help you achieve the best results.

How often will I need tattoo removal treatments?

While it typically takes 4-8 weeks for the body to absorb the ink particles, every patient and tattoo responds differently. Generally treatments are 6-8 weeks apart, to allow for skin recovery and also the physiological processes to eliminate the ink from the tissue.

How will my skin look after the laser treatment?

You may see an immediate slight whitening or “frosting” of the skin, however that will subside immediately after the treatment is complete. Other effects include mild swelling and redness.

My tattoo was treated with a laser in the past and didn’t clear, why would I try again now?

Until the launch of PicoSure, Q-Switched lasers had been considered the gold standard for removing tattoos. Q-Switched laser treatments use thermal energy to heat up and break apart the ink particles. Now with PicoSure, ultra-short pulses hit the ink particle with a pressure so great, the ink shatters into tiny dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are more readily absorbed and eliminated by the body. PicoSure has been proven success in treating even dark, stubborn blue and green inks, as well as previously-treated, stubborn tattoos that were not successfully cleared in the past.

Can I lighten the tattoo to have another one put on top?

Tattoos can be lightened in preparation for a cover-up tattoo.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Leave a Scar?

Traditional tattoo removal laser technology uses nanosecond pulses of energy directed at specific colors. This pulse is long enough to generate heat in the tissue, which is why it hurts, and also why some scarring can occur from heat damage. When the pulse of energy is shortened to only a picosecond, there is not as much time for the surrounding tissues to collect heat, so there is less chance of any scarring and more effective disbursement of broken-up pigment particles that your body just will absorb. Better results, fewer treatments, less pain, less scarring, and more effective on difficult colours.

Is PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal painful?

Most patients report minimal discomfort during the treatment. The sensation is often described as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. We can apply a topical numbing cream if needed to enhance your comfort.

Can PicoSure remove all tattoo colours?

PicoSure is highly effective on a wide range of colours, including traditionally difficult ones like blues and greens. However, some colours may respond better than others. We’ll assess your tattoo’s colours during the consultation to set realistic expectations.

How does PicoSure differ from other tattoo removal methods?

PicoSure uses ultra-short laser pulses (measured in picoseconds) to shatter ink particles, unlike traditional lasers that use nanosecond technology. This results in faster ink breakdown, fewer treatments, and less risk of skin damage.

Can PicoSure treat tattoos that have been previously treated with other methods?

Yes, PicoSure can often successfully treat tattoos that have not responded well to other removal methods. The advanced technology can target ink particles that may have been resistant to previous treatments.

Is PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal safe?

When performed by trained professionals like those at our Harley Street clinic, PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal has an excellent safety profile. The treatment is FDA-cleared and has undergone extensive clinical testing. However, as with any medical procedure, it’s crucial to have your treatment performed by qualified experts to ensure safety and optimal results.

All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and results may vary. We recommend a one to one consultation with our expert practitioners to discuss your treatment options.
