The tan fades by October. The sun spots, the redness and that tight, thirsty feeling tend to stay.

If summer has left you with sun-damaged skin, this is the time of year to deal with it. Treating sun damage on your face and body is much easier in the cooler months.

Below are the signs to look for, and the four treatments we’ve reduced this October at our clinic in London’s Harley Street medical district.

Repair Sun-Damaged Skin This Autumn

What does sun damage look like on your skin?

Sun damage often shows more a few weeks after your holiday, once the tan has faded and the uneven patches are left behind.

The most common signs are:

  • Sun spots: flat brown marks on the face, chest and hands
  • Uneven pigmentation: patchy tone, or melasma that has darkened over summer
  • Redness: flushed cheeks and small visible veins
  • Rough, dull texture: skin that looks tired however much you moisturise
  • Dehydration and fine lines: tightness, especially around the eyes and mouth

If a mole or patch is new, changing, itchy or bleeding, please see your GP before you book any cosmetic treatment.

Can you repair sun-damaged skin?

Usually, yes. The damage underneath can’t be fully undone, but the marks you can see, such as brown spots and redness, often improve with treatment and daily sun protection.

Autumn is the time to start. IPL and peels work best on skin that isn’t tanned, and you need to keep out of strong sun afterwards, which is hard to do in July.

If you’re not sure which treatment fits your skin, book a consultation and we’ll take a look.

Sun spots on your face and redness: IPL

IPL (intense pulsed light) uses short pulses of light to target the pigment in sun spots and the redness in small surface veins. It’s one of the most widely used treatments for sun damage on the face, chest and hands.

After IPL for pigmentation, treated spots usually darken for a few days, then flake away over a week or two. A course is typically three to six sessions, around four weeks apart.

If redness bothers you more than brown marks, IPL can be set up for that too. Our page on IPL for rosacea and redness explains how.

October offer: 10% off a course of three (£594, was £660) or 20% off a course of six (£1,000, was £1,250).

Melasma and stubborn pigmentation: Cosmelan Peel

The Cosmelan Peel is a professional depigmentation treatment designed to reduce the appearance of melasma and stubborn dark patches. It’s often a good fit when skin pigmentation covers a wider area or keeps coming back.

There are two parts to it: a mask we apply in clinic, which stays on for several hours, and a homecare routine you follow for the next few months.

Expect some redness and peeling in the first week. Daily SPF is essential throughout, which is another reason this treatment suits autumn and winter.

October offer: 15% off. Now £850 (was £1,000), including the in-clinic treatment and your homecare kit.

Dry, tired skin: Aquashine skin boosters

Sun, sea water and air conditioning all dry your skin out, and moisturiser only reaches the surface. Skin boosters work a little deeper.

Aquashine is an injectable skin booster that combines hyaluronic acid with peptides, vitamins and amino acids. It’s placed just under the surface in a series of tiny injections, to improve hydration and support skin repair.

It won’t change the shape of your face. The aim is skin that looks fresher and feels more comfortable, built up over a course of sessions a few weeks apart.

October offer: buy three sessions and get your fourth free. That’s four sessions for £800 (worth £1,160).

And the rest of you: Lipofirm

If you’d like a post-holiday reset for your body as well, Lipofirm is a non-surgical treatment for fat reduction, skin tightening and muscle toning.

It uses radiofrequency energy and muscle activation, with no needles and no downtime. A standard session takes about 25 minutes, and it works best as a course alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise.

October offer: 50% off a course of four (£390, was £780), or a course of eight for £720 (was £1,560).

How to keep your results

Without daily sun protection, pigmentation tends to creep back, whatever treatment you’ve had.

The NHS advises using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and at least 4-star UVA protection. Wear it every day, including the grey ones, and be extra careful after IPL or a peel, when your skin is more sensitive to light.

Frequently asked questions

How do you fix sun-damaged skin?

Treat the marks you can see and protect against new damage. In clinic, that usually means IPL for sun spots and redness, a depigmentation peel for melasma, and skin boosters for dehydration. At home, it means sunscreen every day.

How do you get rid of sun spots on your face?

Sun spots on the face are commonly treated with IPL, which targets the pigment so the spot darkens and flakes away. Most courses are three to six sessions, around four weeks apart. Have any new or changing mark checked by your GP first.

When is the best time of year to treat sun damage?

Autumn and winter, because IPL and peels need untanned skin and very little sun exposure afterwards. In the UK that’s much easier between October and March.

Will sun damage come back after treatment?

It can. UV light is a major trigger for sun spots and melasma, so new sun exposure can bring pigmentation back. Daily SPF 30 or higher helps your results last.
